Truffa degli hard disk Seagate usati venduti come nuovi: c'entra la criptovaluta Chia?

La "truffa dei dischi Seagate", che riguarda la vendita di hard disk usati come se fossero nuovi, sembra assumere connotati globali. C'è anche una teoria: i dischi sarebbero scarti di server farm in Cina collegate al farming della criptovaluta Chia.

La scorsa settimana vi abbiamo informato della "truffa dei dischi Seagate", ovvero la vendita di hard disk usati spacciati per nuovi. Sulla vicenda non c'è ancora un quadro preciso, ma ci sono alcuni sviluppi degni di nota.

Per prima cosa, il sito tedesco Heise ha ricevuto altre segnalazioni di acquirenti truffati, per un totale che ha superato quota 200. Le segnalazioni non provengono solo dalla Germania, ma anche da Austria, Gran Bretagna, Repubblica Ceca, Svizzera e persino dagli Stati Uniti e dal Giappone. Si sospetta, quindi, una truffa su scala globale.

Nel suo articolo, Heise sottolinea che la frode potrebbe avere origine in Cina. L'ipotesi è che gli hard disk usati provengano da ex server farm impiegate per il "farming" della criptovaluta Chia (ne scrivemmo nel 2021). In pratica, si tratterebbe di unità utilizzate quando l'attività era redditizia, ma che ora, dopo la chiusura delle farm legata ai costi energetici superiori ai profitti previsti, giacciono ferme in qualche magazzino.

In un altro approfondimento, Heise ha raccolto le dichiarazioni di rivenditori online tedeschi e una nuova presa di posizione di Seagate. Alternate assicura che né il negozio né i suoi fornitori tedeschi erano a conoscenza del fatto che la merce non fosse nuova. In caso di problemi, i clienti possono contattare seagate@alternate.de via e-mail.

Galaxus ha pubblicato una pagina di supporto sull'argomento e invita i clienti a rivolgersi al proprio servizio assistenza. Proshop permette ai clienti di inviare gratuitamente i propri HDD per la sostituzione. Altri rivenditori ricordano che in questi casi si applica direttamente la garanzia legale, mentre Wortmann vuole analizzare l'HDD prima di procedere con eventuali rimborsi.

Seagate ha rilasciato un'ulteriore dichiarazione rispetto a quella iniziale, in cui afferma di aver preso la questione "molto seriamente" e di aver avviato "un'indagine approfondita". L'azienda ribadisce di non essere coinvolta nella vicenda e di fornire sempre prodotti nuovi ai rivenditori.

"Non possiamo fornire dettagli sull'indagine in corso, ma sospettiamo che queste unità siano state vendute nuove da Seagate ai clienti e successivamente rivendute da questi ultimi sul mercato dell'usato. In questo caso, riteniamo che gli hard disk siano stati ricommercializzati in qualche punto della catena di fornitura e rivenduti come nuovi". Seagate ha messo a disposizione l'indirizzo fraud@seagate.com per segnalare truffe di questo tipo.

Normalmente, le ore di funzionamento di un disco rigido o di un SSD sono memorizzate nei parametri SMART e possono essere lette con strumenti come CrystalDiskInfo o Hard Disk Sentinel.

Tuttavia, in questi casi, i valori SMART risultano azzerati, come accade nei modelli ricertificati da Seagate. Solo interrogando i valori FARM (Field Accessible Reliability Metrics) è possibile scoprire le reali ore di funzionamento.

Il modo più semplice per ottenere i valori FARM è utilizzare smartmontools per Windows e Linux (download). Assicuratevi di avere la versione 7.4, in quanto supporta la query (smartctl -l farm /dev/sd[X]) per vedere i parametri FARM e cercate il parametro alla voce "Power on Hours". I valori possono essere letti anche con Seatools, una suite di strumenti ufficiali di Seagate.

AGGIORNAMENTO 25-02-2025

Secondo un ulteriore articolo di Heise, sarebbero coinvolti nella truffa anche i modelli IronWolf e IronWolf Pro di Seagate, destinati principalmente ai NAS.

Ho comprato ad Agosto 2024 un disco da 12TB usato da Amazon (ricondizionato dato per nuovo) e ai tempi avevo guardato solo il dato S.M.A.R.T.
Ad oggi riguardando invece con il tool smartctl risulta che è acceso da 24740 ore, quasi 3 anni :

C'è qualcuno che volendo provare la versione per Windows di smartctl è in grado di visualizzare un report 'FARM' simile a quello di @Lain84?

Se li vendono come usati qualche domanda me la farei . Se li usi per un Nas devi comprarli nuovi c'è poco da dare . Ho trovato un ottimo venditore dalla Germania che vende ironwolf pro 16 TB a 190 euro l'uno l'estate scorsa nuovi di pacca e sigillati tra l'altro . Spendere poco meno per averli usati non ha senso

Io ho smesso da molto più di un anno e non solo per elettronica e informatica, ma anche per tutto il resto (e dico tutto). Solo gli alimenti non posso farne a meno, ma anche lì ho dato una sforbiciata per quel che potevo.
Solo che non cambia nulla. Date una mano anche voi...
