Australian JSF Industry Coalition Formed (Source: Australian Department of Defence; issued March 14, 2005) The Australian Government, Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems Australia on behalf of Australian industry, have today signed a Partnering Charter to form a framework for the Joint Strike Fighter Industry Coalition (JIC). Defence Minister Robert Hill said BAE Systems Australia will form, and lead, the Industry Coalition that will work to foster collaboration and long-term relationships between Australian industry and Lockheed Martin for total JSF life-cycle sustainment and follow-on development. Senator Hill said the JIC would build on the work of the industry element of the JSF Regional Support Capability Task Force, established in August 2003, to undertake preliminary analysis of Australia's JSF support requirements. The four founding members of the JIC - BAE Systems Australia, Boeing Australia Limited, Thales Training and Simulation and MINCOM - will work together to represent Australian industry, including small and medium enterprises (SMEs), to provide ‘best value' support and follow-on development capabilities to Australian JSF aircraft and potentially JSF aircraft operated or deployed in the region. Current activities include investigation of the potential for a JSF International Pilot Training Centre in Australia. "Australia's current fleet of F-111, F/A-18 and Hawk aircraft is already supported by a close performance-based partnership between Australian industry and the Royal Australian Air Force," Senator Hill said. "The JIC aims to extend that partnership. Early establishment of industry arrangements for future JSF support is essential to ensure Australian industry is positioned to meet future requirements and to win additional work as part of the globally competitive JSF program." The Government's decision to invest up to US$150 million in the decade-long systems development and demonstration phase of the JSF program is already paying dividends for Australian industry, with 18 companies selected so far to work on the program. This initiative reinforces the strong partnership between Government and Australian industry to work together as Team Australia to position us to win work and to provide the necessary technology and capability infrastructure for the long-term support of JSF aircraf

I motori del JSF superano il test di durata
Pratt & Whitney's F135 Program Surpasses 2,500 SDD Test Hours (Source: Pratt & Whitney; issued March 21, 2005) WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. --- Pratt & Whitney's F135 program has surpassed 2,500 System Development and Demonstration (SDD) test hours, underscoring the engine's unmatched maturity and reliability. This significant milestone, achieved during engine runs at the company's advanced test facility in West Palm Beach, Fla., represents the cumulative hours of F135 SDD testing, including both Conventional Take-Off and Landing (CTOL)/Carrier Variant (CV), and Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) configuration tests. The 2,500 SDD test hours are in addition to the more than 3,500 test hours the F135 accumulated during the Concept Demonstration Aircraft (CDA) phase of the F-35 development program. "This achievement is a testament to the F135 propulsion team," said Bill Gostic, vice president, F135 engine programs for Pratt & Whitney. "We are now focused on completing testing required for Initial Flight Release qualification and delivering the first flight test engine in December of this year." To date, the Pratt & Whitney led F135 propulsion team has delivered three CTOL/CV configuration and four STOVL configuration F135 engines to test for a total of seven engines delivered on or ahead of schedule. The technologically advanced F135, power for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF), is an evolution of the highly successful F119 engine for the F/A-22 Raptor. Together the F135 and F119 will have logged more than one million flight hours in support of the F-35's introduction into operational service in 2012. Pratt & Whitney will deliver the first flight test engine in December in preparation for Initial Flight Release in January 2006 and first flight in August 2006. Production deliveries of the F135 are scheduled to begin in early 2009. Several key tests were included in the latest round of engine runs, including three bearing swivel module (3BSM) functional tests, roll posts aeromechanical tests, and integrated systems tests with Lockheed Martin Corp. The F135 propulsion system team consists of Pratt & Whitney, the prime contractor with responsibility for the main engine and system integration; Rolls-Royce, providing the LiftFan, three bearing swivel module and roll posts to the STOVL F-35B; and Hamilton Sundstrand, provider of the F135's control system, external accessories and gearbox. Pratt & Whitney, a United Technologies company, is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, space propulsion systems and industrial gas turbines.

PALMDALE, Calif. --- Northrop Grumman Corporation has completed the first major component of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, demonstrating manufacturing concepts that will become critical once initial production begins in 2007. The center fuselage was delivered on-time to F-35 prime contractor Lockheed Martin during a ceremony on April 23 and will be shipped to Fort Worth, Texas, on May 2 for the beginning of the aircraft's final assembly. "With the completion of the center fuselage, the first major aircraft component to be assembled, the F-35 team has ushered in a new era for aircraft production that incorporates advanced technologies and cutting-edge manufacturing techniques into what will be a unique continuous moving-line process," said Scott Seymour, corporate vice president and president Northrop Grumman Integrated Systems. "Northrop Grumman's F-35 work leverages decades of experience in advanced tactical fighters, long-range strike aircraft and the integration of systems such as the F/A-18, B-2 and Global Hawk." The company's assembly line in Palmdale, Calif., integrates advanced 3-D modeling techniques, state-of-the-art fabrication and tooling equipment and a factory layout similar to that of the automotive industry to support the F-35’s rigorous production schedule. The 12-month assembly process began in May 2004 on the upper subassembly with the drilling, counter-sinking and assembly of the inlet ducts. New technologies developed by Northrop Grumman allowed each duct, made entirely from composite materials, to be assembled as a single structure instead of from numerous pieces. The ducts were then mated to the upper portion of the center fuselage, the first fuel tanks were sealed, the system components were installed and pressure and leak tests were successfully accomplished. In parallel, the lower subassembly, built of aluminum and titanium frames and keel components, was manufactured. In early January 2005, the two structures were mated and the center fuselage was structurally complete. Final systems installation and testing of hydraulics, actuated doors, the power thermal management system and wire harnesses completed the assembly. "Innovative design and outstanding craftsmanship, brought together by the thousands of aerospace experts from Northrop Grumman and its suppliers from around the world, were instrumental in the development of this shipset," said Janis Pamiljans, vice president and F-35 program manager, Northrop Grumman Integrated Systems. "The future of military aircraft design, manufacturing and supportability has been dramatically altered and everyone -- the F-35 team and our customers -- will benefit from these new processes." The F-35 is a stealthy, supersonic multi-role fighter designed to replace a wide-range of aging fighter and strike aircraft. Three variants derived from a common design will ensure the F-35 meets the performance needs of the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Navy and allied defense forces worldwide, while staying within strict affordability targets. Currently, U.S. and United Kingdom sales alone account for nearly 2,600 aircraft and the Pentagon expects additional foreign purchases to be in the thousands. As a principal member of the Lockheed Martin team, Northrop Grumman plays a critical role in the development and demonstration of the F-35. The company's contributions total more than 25 percent of the aircraft and span five of its seven sectors. They range from integrating a major section of the aircraft's structure to producing key avionics and communications subsystems to developing mission-planning software and training systems. Working as an integrated team with its customers, teammates and suppliers, Northrop Grumman delivers products that help make the F-35 the world's most advanced multi-role, stealthy combat aircraft. In addition to Integrated Systems, four other Northrop Grumman sectors support the F-35 program: the Electronic Systems sector provides the fire control radar and, in joint efforts with Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, is developing the electro-optical distributed aperture system and the electro-optical targeting system; the Mission Systems sector provides system and software engineering support for the mission planning system; the Space Technology sector provides the integrated communications, navigation and identification avionics suite; and the Information Technology sector, in joint efforts with Lockheed Martin Simulation, Training and Support, provides training management software. Northrop Grumman Corporation is a global defense company headquartered in Los Angeles, Calif. Northrop Grumman provides technologically advanced, innovative products, services and solutions in systems integration, defense electronics, information technology, advanced aircraft, shipbuilding and space technology. With more than 125,000 employees, and operations in all 50 states and 25 countries, Northrop Grumman serves U.S. and international military, government and commercial customers.
