Windows Vista SP1 Activation Changes Will Reverberate to Windows Server 2008

The alterations Microsoft has in stored for the activation infrastructure in Windows Vista, with the release of the first service pack for the platform, will also reverberate to Windows Server 2008. Vista and Widows Server 2008, formerly codenamed Longhorn, are joined at the hip in more ways than one. The two client and server platforms share the same core, and this will become evident with Vista SP1, but the activation methods are also common for the products.

One aspect of Vista's evolution with the introduction of Service Pack 1 will be reflected in the overhauling of the company's anti-piracy strategy. Mike Sievert, Corporate Vice President of Windows Product Marketing, revealed on December 4, 2007, that Microsoft plans to kill Reduced Functionality Mode, as well as the Grace timer and OEM BIOS cracks. The disabled RFM is going to be replaced in Vista SP1 with non-genuine notifications. When it comes to the common ground shared by Vista and Windows Server 2008, the activation changes will be reflected in the Volume Activation 2.0 component of the Software Protection Platform.

"Volume Activation 2.0 allows for different types of activation and is configurable by IT Pros to automate and manage the product activation process for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista system licensed under volume licensing while addressing piracy and key management issues. VA 2.0 eliminates the use of product keys at the time of software installation and enables better protection and management of customer-specific product keys through new and enhanced activation management tools," explained Julius Sinkevicius, Senior Product Manager.

The bottom line is that Microsoft is taking a step back, with the disabling of Reduced Functionality Mode to the behavior of Windows XP copies detected as non-genuine. This move is valid for both Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008. Sinkevicius explained that up to this point Microsoft has not integrated the new activation model into Windows Server 2008. All the pre-release builds of the company's last 32-bit server operating system have featured the activation model of the products available for retail. This will change with the launch of Windows Server 2008, as Volume Licensing customers will be delivered with KMS and MAK activation keys.

"With Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista, when a system was never activated or the activation process failed, the system entered reduced functionality mode (RFM) and certain function and features of the operating system would cease working. Based on customer feedback, we are moving away from reducing functions if a server is not activated properly, and instead will provide clear and prominent notifications to customers that their systems are not activated and require activation. The notifications will be recurring and we will also let them know what steps they should take to activate the system to ensure they are using genuine software. Perchè microsoft ha il monopolio dei sistemi operativi, e chi vuole giocare per esempio o altre applicazioni tipo autocad etc, deve usare windows...
Inoltre, io vedo pochissimi computer con preinstallato linux, sempre perchè la microsoft ha il monopolio dei sistemi operativi ;)
Con questo non voglio dire che windows fa schifo, anzi io per ora uso SOLO windows, ma ho spiegato secondo me, le motivazioni del suo successo, dovuto anche se non principalmente al p2p ;)

2 motivi:
1) meglio 20% del mondo che lo usa pagando, 70% del mondo che lo usa a sbafo e 10% che usa altro piuttosto che solo un 30% che lo usa pagando ed il 70% che non lo usa... e di anno in anno si la situazione degenererebbe portando microsoft alla rovina). Cifre tirate a caso tanto per rendere l'idea

2) se ti metti a lobccare sistemi operativi crei dei gran casini che significano migliaia di cause per i danni che hai causato, sia che li hai causati perché hai legittimamene bloccato un sistema operativo senza licenza, sia (e tantopiù) se lo hai bloccato per un qualche errore nel riconoscimento della licenza. Tieni presente che volendo io posso anche acquistare windows con licenza e poi, tanto per gioco, crackarlo senza usare la licenza originale. Se mi boccano il sistema operativo mentre sta gestendo, chessò, uno sbarco su marte e mi fa esplodere lo shuttle... io la licenza la possiedo... e so' tutti c***i di chi ha bloccato il sistema operativo... o quanto meno ce ne sarebbe da discutere. Ergo, nessuno ti bloccherà mai un sistema operativo da sotto il naso.

Windows Vista SP1 Release Candidate Almost Here!

stay tuned, the fully fledged Release Candidate built for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is almost here. In fact, Microsoft is gearing up to make the announcement about the availability of Vista SP1 RC. This way, the Redmond company will move the first service pack for Vista out of RC preview stage. Vista SP1 RC has been planed to drop any day now, since earlier this week, with Microsoft delivering all the right indications of the RC build's imminent release, but the wait is nearly over. Later today, the company will announce the availability of Windows Vista SP1 RC.

The most recent release of the refresh has been Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate build 6001.17042 delivered in mid November to some 15,000 testers. Internally, Microsoft moved up to build 17051 toward the end of November, but little transpired of the company's upcoming plans, except indicators of the proximity of the RC build. The Redmond company failed in disclosing the version of the Vista SP1 development milestone achieved internally, but did hint that December would bring the next stage in the evolution of the service pack.

This week, Microsoft has also made available the first Release Candidate of Windows XP Service Pack 3 to all subscribers of the Microsoft Developer Network and TechNet. In this context, it is clear that the RC for Vista is not far behind, the two service packs have been virtually joined at the hip, ever since they have initially been introduced in mid July 2007. No word yet from Microsoft regarding Vista SP1 RC taking the same path as XP SP3 RC via MSDN and TechNet, although this is the most likely evolution of the service pack. Still, a public version of Vista is also expected to hit in December. And on top of it all, as Paul Thurrott reported, Vista SP1 RC would be accompanied by the Release Candidate 1 of Windows Server 2008, formerly codenamed Longhorn.

Ti faccio presente che quando Windows è diventato un monopolio, i P2P manco esistevano ;) Io Windows lo uso solo per i giochi mentre Linux lo uso come sistema primario per tutto il resto. Ma non è il P2P che ha fatto diventare Windows un monopolio.
E' semplicemente che è stato uno dei primi sistemi operativi a consentire di usare i computer anche a chi di computer non ci capisce niente e con buone operazioni di marketing alle spalle. Questo ha fatto si che determinati produttori abbiano basato le loro code base interamente su Windows, rafforzando di fatto la supremazia.
Supremazia che non combacia con superiorità tecnologica, sia ben chiaro. Anzi, a dir la verità Windows di supremazia tecnologica non ha mai avuto gran che.

Today we're making available the release candidate (RC) of Windows Vista SP1 via Microsoft Connect, and tomorrow subscribers to TechNet and MDSN will have access to those RC bits too. In addition, the RC will be available to the public next week via Microsoft's Download Center. The release candidate phase of beta software is typically the final phase before the RTM (release-to-manufacturing) of a product and indicates that the code has attained a significant level of performance and stability.

Let me call out several changes made since the Beta release of Service Pack 1 -- many of which came about as a result of direct feedback from our Beta-testing community (thank you!):

The size of the standalone installers have decreased significantly. For example, the standalone installer packages consisting of all 36 languages (x86 and x64 chip architectures) are smaller by over 50%. The standalone installer packages consisting of just the 5 languages (again, x86 and x64) slated for initial release are more than 30% smaller in size.
The required amount of disc space for SP1 installation has also decreased significantly. Furthermore, with the RC, if more space is required to install SP1, an error message will now display exactly how much space is needed to complete the installation.
Previous SP1 versions left behind a directory of files that wasn't needed after installation and occupied about 1GB of space; the RC includes automatic disk clean-up to remove this directory.
Installation reliability has been improved based on bug reports and error codes reported from Windows Update (thanks, Beta testers!). Testing shows that these improvements have significantly increased the proportion of successful installations of the RC.
We've improved the user experience of installing SP1 via Windows Update. During the Beta release, users installed without much guidance from Windows Update. The RC now contains a series of screens with detailed information on SP1.
We also have information to share with IT professionals and system administrators regarding final plans for SP1: we're on track to complete and release SP1 in the first quarter of 2008. When SP1 is complete and we reach our release to manufacturing (RTM) milestone, then shortly after the standalone installer will be released to the Web in two waves. The first wave will consist of the standalone installer (x86 and x64) for the 5 initial languages -- English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese. These languages will be deployed shortly after the RTM milestone. The second wave will launch 8-12 weeks after the first and will consist of all remaining languages, for both chip architectures (x86 and x64).

For administrators managing Windows Vista PCs configured to use Windows Update but not wishing to deploy SP1 upon its release, we have a "blocker patch" that will prevent installation of SP1. If you're not familiar with SP1, you can find more information in this whitepaper. We built Windows Vista SP1 to address specific reliability and performance issues and also to support new types of hardware and several emerging standards. Of course, those of you familiar with SP1 already know that some of SP1's improvements are already available via Windows Update.

A reminder to anyone installing the SP1 RC bits: you will need to uninstall the release candidate of SP1 before you can install a later version.

no, non è uscita ancora nessuna delle due che dici tu! MA!!! tra qualche giorno uscirà la RC del SP1, scaricabile dal sito http://www.microsoft.com/italy/msdn/default.mspx (ora è inutile che ci vai tanto non c'è ancora niente! ;) )... insomma, dobbiamo aspettare.

Per quanto riguarda invece l'installazione, lascia perdere la beta che hai scaricato, piuttosto quella che scaricheremo tutti da msdn sarà suppongo un file .msi e quindi lo eseguirà in automatico ;)

Il rilascio della SP1 è previsto nel primo trimestre del 2008. Saranno prima rilasciate le versioni a 32 bit e 64 bit in Inglese, Francese, Spagnolo, Tedesco e Giapponese, e nell'arco di 8-12 settimane saranno rilasciate (tutte insieme) le versioni a 32 bit e a 64 bit delle altre lingue (Italiano incluso).

per quanto riguarda micosoft gli aggiornamenti sono sempre stati gratisss

ma se l hai provato perchè non la fai per bene una preview,
e dai prova un po tutto e poi posta le tue impressioni

Devo dire che per un attimo sono stato tentato dall'eseguire l'installazione,ma poi,riflettendoci bene.ho deciso di aspettare...in fin dei conti manca poco ormai.

Il sistema mi dice Vista sp1 v668Confermo aumento velocità generale (ovviamente dopo aver deframmentato tutto e pulito il registro per bene), soprattutto il file manager, spegnimento più rapido, reattività ai livelli di XP, menù di avvio che si apre subito, ho installato su tutta la precedente installazione e non rilevo problemi significativi, solo il collegamento al pannello di controllo dal menù start non funziona :confused: quindi bisogna aprirlo dal gestione risorse.
Per il resto ho notato un aumento del registro di sistema da circa 55MB a 70MB. Però credo che quando uscirà la versione integrata dalla MS semplificheranno anche il registro. Devo ancora provare giochi e cose varie ma già per il fatto che non ci mette 40 anni a caricare le inconcine in explorer sono molto soddisfatto :D

Il mio pc è potente quindi non notavo rallentamenti evidenti, tranne appunto quelli documentati del traferimento in lan, copia file, caricamento icone, ecc...
Ora con sp1 rc mi pare molto migliorato. Penso che con sp1 finale sia ancora meglio. Diciamo che sono soddisfatto per adesso, tieni conto che uso Vista da quando è uscito, non l'ho mai reinstallato e non ho mai avuto problemi di stabilità, ecc... solo appunto un po' lentino in alcune cose, ora risolte, fermo restando che si può sempre migliorare.

il primo vista al day one era mio in Italia :D
ho eseguito tutte le hotfix di Microsoft , ho solo reistallato di volta in volta i driver Nvidia e non conosco la parola problemi :D

Nei computer privati non c'è motivo, in una LAN da 1500 computer aziendali che fanno girare del software custom, spesso basato su tecnologie obsolete per mandare avanti la intranet aziendale, i motivi per cui l'SP1 non si dovrebbe installare (se non prima di aver verificato eventuali adeguamenti necessari) sono palesi.

Ogni tanto ci confondiamo tra il pc di casa e quello aziendale.

In Azienda ( quelle serie :-) ) Prima si fa un laboratorio di test, dopo si va in pre- Produzione ovvero un ambiente = alla produzione\Esercizio , e solo alal fine si va in Esercizio\Produzione.

Visto che sp1 ecc , vengono distribuiti con i Windows Update . Le aziende che utilizzano WSUS o SMS , non hanno bisogno del tool perchè , c'è una gestione centralizzata per gli UPDATE , ma le aziende che non utilizzano tali sistemi , non posso permettersi di aver discriminanze di installazioni , In un Buon IT , si deve sempre AVERE una BASE-LINE comune e non avere pc che sono 5 versioni piu avanti o indientro.

Il tool aiuta a questo , e non è come molti hanno scritto ( solo per aprire bocca ) Che e per pararsi il cxxo Microsoft.

Viva i bimboxxxxx, che parlano sol oper aprire bocca , e non sanno che differenza c'è tra un bit e un byte , anche se leggono forum come HWupgrade

Ma mi pongo e vi porgo una domanda .

Il file di registro sono archiviati dentro la cartella C:\Windows\System32\config

Questi file vengono come il resto dei file rimanenti vengono gestiti dal tool di defrag.

Che motivo c'è di utilizzare un tool di 3° parti ?

Ora vedrò se è un problema solo mio perchè la hp a suo tempo non aveva i driver per vista allora smanettai con lo spooler per farla andare; ora sono usciti i driver da un po' e li avevo messi e tutto andava bene.
Vi faccio sapere se riesco a farla ripartire reinstallando i driver.
Voi intanto controllate che il vostro spooler funzioni.

Le uniche pecche che ho potuto notare è che alcuni antivirus non girano proprio a dovere con la rc1 ma è normale come cosa.. Si risolve in questo modo :

Apri la finestra stampante

Su una parte bianca della finestra , tasto desto , "esegui come amministratore"--> " Proprietà server" hai 2 opzioni ho cancelli i driver e reinstalli la stampante o elimini le notifiche dello spooler

In effetti non è bellissima come cosa la tua.. onestamente su 2 PC messa e non ho problemi pero sono praticamente identific.. non so ti direi ti provare a formattare mettere su rc1 e poi tutti i driver.. anche se per me a sto punto ti conviene aspettare fine gennaio quando teoricamente sara finale.. Oppure provare a disinstallare i driver audio e rimetterli..

Risolto, sono entrato in modalita provvisoria ed ho risolto.

Dunque il problema è proprio del generatore di stama, tutte le stampanti non vanno, anche se le ho rimosse e reinstallate...
Le icone di sistema (orologio, ecc..) io le ho e me le spunta pure, quindi tutto normale.
Non mi funziona più la sezione per visualizzare gli aggiornamenti windows installati... c'è un comando per accedervi da esegui?
Forse ho sbagliato qualcosa quando ho installato sp1, vorrei riprovare ma mi dice che è già installato ovviamente, a questo punto vorrei provare a rimuoverlo perchè il file di installazione forse era un po' corrotto poichè non è uguale a quello di altri...

Dunque il problema è proprio del generatore di stama, tutte le stampanti non vanno, anche se le ho rimosse e reinstallate...
Le icone di sistema (orologio, ecc..) io le ho e me le spunta pure, quindi tutto normale.
Non mi funziona più la sezione per visualizzare gli aggiornamenti windows installati... c'è un comando per accedervi da esegui?
Forse ho sbagliato qualcosa quando ho installato sp1, vorrei riprovare ma mi dice che è già installato ovviamente, a questo punto vorrei provare a rimuoverlo perchè il file di installazione forse era un po' corrotto poichè non è uguale a quello di altri...

gente, eseguendo lo script, l'unica cosa che ha fatto è installarmi due aggiornamenti, non tre. in ogni caso una certa velocità nell'eliminazione/spostamento di files di grandi dimensioni la noto... inutile ripetersi, le impressioni sono per tutti le stesse. ;)

hai cancellato da li i driver ?si, ho fatto come hai detto tu con privilegi di amministratore ho cancellato prima tutte le stampanti poi tutti i server di stampa dicendogli di cancellare anche i driver e tutto.
Poi ho fatto partire l'installazione degli ultimi driver della hp 1020 per vista, me la riconosce e installalla bene, ma poi appena provo a stampare, da ogni programma, mi dà errore (l'errore cambia per ogni programma, è un avviso del programma stesso in pratica). Ho provato anche a fare "stampa pagina di prova" direttamente dal pannello della stampante (quello di windows), ma anche lì mi dice che non è possibile stampare... ovviamente l'ho sempre usata 2 giorni fa, prima di installare sp1.
Forse reinstallo tutto il vista e rimetto sp1 da zero così sono sicuro che non si sia rovinato qualcosa da prima. Il servizio "server di stampa" è regolarmente avviato, ho controllato anche i registri degli errori e non ci sono cose apparentemente connesse alla stampa.
Per il resto mi pare vada tutto bene, a parte il collegamento al pannello di controllo che non funziona più nemmeno se lo ricrei...

SP1 risolve il problema de i 4Gb -> di ram

Alcune macchine nonostante vi sia stato montato Vista 64 , quando si faceva l'upgrade di ram , il sistema operativo , non vedeva correttamente la quantità montata.

Vi erano una serie di procedure , tra cui anche riformattare il tutto :-(

uno può parlare degli aspetti più evidenti , le performance anche se sembrano migliorate , non sono veritiere, per via del codice di Debug ancora presente.,

Comunque le mie impressioni:

Ho testato tutto quello che sp1 prometteva ( vedi prima pagina ) e attualmente tutto sembra veritiero. Acneh se migliorabile ( Discorso DEbug da eliminare ).

In più come detto prima è stato fixato il problema dei =>4Gb di ram cosa non detta, ma verificata 2 due pc in ufficio che presentavano il problema

Altro aspetto non indicato

In AD sembra piu veloce con la gestione della rete.

Cosa non ho trovato le Dx sono ancora le 10 e non le 10.1

Nei giochi sembra meglio gestita la ram

RC=Release Candidate dunque non è ufficiale
Dunque non è la versione ultimata , in più la RC1 ha ancora con se molto codice di debug ,le prestazioni anche se buone , sono sempre monitorate per il debug , dunque si dovrebbe migliorare il tutto con la versione finale ..

File System NTFS: ora è decisamente più difficile perdere i dati memorizzati sulle unità removibili formattate NTFS, lo si può provare facilmente provando a scollegare un’unità USB su cui si stanno ancora scrivendo dei dati. Nel momento in cui la periferica viene scollegata si chiude anche la finestra dell’applicazione aperta e si ritroveranno i dati salvati all’accesso successivo
Quindi non serve più utilizzare la "rimozione sicura dell'hardware"? E per le chiavette con il file system "FAT"?

Ok ho appena finito di installare pure io il SP1 da windows Update fortunatamente senza più dover smanettare sul registro per far vedere Vista italiano come inglese. Meno male!!!
Quello che più mi preme di questo SP1 è che risolva lo strano problema di memoria che si verifica quando si spostano grandi quantità di dati.

beh, guarda che il SP1 scarica solo ciò che ti manca: io ho scaricato solo 75 mega ma il massimo è 500 mega circa, quindi non so quanto ti convenga scaricare tutto il SP1 senza prima aggiornare (gli aggiornamenti della Home Premium ora senza il SP sono 140 mega circa ;) )

Io l'ho scaricato direttamente con windows update così da evitare gli 800 Mb del mattone multilingua perchè da QUI (http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/12/10/32-bit-and-64-bit-standalone-vista-sp1-rc-free-download-via-http-supports-all-36-mui-languages/) ieri il download era lentissimo.
Scaricherò la versione distribuibile solo all'uscita di quello finale.
Ho usato QUESTA (http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/12/06/guide-to-upgrade-or-install-windows-vista-sp1-rc-1-build-600117052-v668-online/) procedura con modifica di windows update tramite un file .CMD e mi ha correttamente installato l'SP1 in italiano senza più fare casini sul registro.

Mi manca solo di togliere quella maledetta scritta dal desktop....

Ah c'entra poco ma è uscito anche l'SP1 per Office 2007 ;)

Io ho installato la RC1 fornita da Knighhell e la scritta di valutazione non è comparsa da nessuna parte :confused:

E' esattamente lo stesso desktop di sempre. Il pannello di controllo non funziona, intendo l'icona, sia da start sia quella posizionata sul desktop come mi sembra qualcuno abbia già segnalato.

Miglioramenti? Evidenti anche per un uso home. ho provato una copia di 2gb di musica in mp3 da una partizione a un'altra dello stesso HD.

Specifiche del mio note: Core 2 Duo T7200 2gb di RAM e HD 80Gb 7200rpm. Prima del sp1 spostava i file a una velocità di 3,5Mb/s. Adesso? 11,4Mb/s in media.

Fatevi 2 calcoli. anche l'esecuzione del setup di un file su rete wireless 802.11G (copertura massima) è triplicato ad occhio è croce. non ho in questo caso dati alla mano ma ho sempre utilizzato intensamente i setup su rete e quindi con una certa cognizione di causa vi dico questo...

Il freno a mano di cui parlavano le prime recensioni su Windows Vista pare eliminato: persino aprire il menu a tendina sul desktop col click destro del mouse ha subito velocizzazioni.

Idem per risorse del computer, in generale la navigazione tra cartelle
Stessa cosa dicasi per IE (anche se in questo caso poco)
Sempre in IE miglioramenti ci sono nello scorrimento delle pagine durante la visualizzazione, molti di voi avranno notato che prima IE aveva piccoli freeze durante lo scorrimento della barra laterale.

Queste per quanto mi riguarda le modifiche per ora, ma l'ho usato davvero poco da quando ho installato l'sp. magari posto altro non appena noto qualcos'altro di interessante...

PS. Uso windows Vista Business 32bit

Ps2. domanda un pochino OT, tra vista Ultimate e Windows Vista Business c'è differenza nello spazio occupato sull'HD? In linea di max avendo piu funzioni la ultimate dovrebbe richiedere + spazio...

io ho downloaddato da qualche giorno office 2997 in prova, mi scade a febbraio mi pare, e coq prima ti da 8 hotfix , ieri sera mi ha aggiornato a office SP1, quindi appena scade dovrò rimuovere tutto?? mi piace solo one note per il resto uso open office quando mis erve :(

cmq sono scappato a casa un attimo ed ho fatto l update nuovo che ha rilasciato microsoft, nel riavvio lascia attendere parecchio intanto sono tornato a lavoro,, ditemi voi cosa succede, intendo questo che non è sp1

Direi di pensare ad eventuali integrazioni solo con l'SP1 finale, con queste versioni non definitive meglio fare tutto a parte.

allora , dopo aver scaricato questo ho avviato il set up , e nel momento di riavviarsi ha cominciato ad addormentarsi, non ce stato verso manco con la modalità provvisoria, ho dovuto reistallare tutto, fortunatamente che si crea la cartella Windows OLD cosi non ho perso nulla.

Quindi se questo update non vi è consigliato da Windows UPDATE non rischiate assolutamente,

Ho reistallato Vista per la prima volta in un anno per una cavolata, e questo non mi va giu. Menomale che si crea windows OLD

No no non ho installato quel file,è proprio l'installazione della RC sp1 che non parte,ho provato con lo UAC abilitato,disabilitato,eseguito come amministratore ma dopo avermi chiesto se sono sicuro di voler installare il software rimane lì come se nulla fosse.:muro:

allora , dopo aver scaricato questo ho avviato il set up , e nel momento di riavviarsi ha cominciato ad addormentarsi, non ce stato verso manco con la modalità provvisoria, ho dovuto reistallare tutto, fortunatamente che si crea la cartella Windows OLD cosi non ho perso nulla.

Quindi se questo update non vi è consigliato da Windows UPDATE non rischiate assolutamente,


Qui si fa il contrario di tutto ,a volte mi passa la voglia di scrivere

• Adds support for exFAT, a new file system supporting larger overall capacity and larger files, which will be used in Flash memory storage and consumer devices.

• Adds support for SD Advanced DMA (ADMA) on compliant SD standard host controllers. This new transfer mechanism, which is expected to be supported in SD controllers soon, will improve transfer performance and decrease CPU utilization.

• Adds support for creating a single DVD media that boots on PCs with either BIOS or EFI.

• Enhances support for high density drives by adding new icons and labels that will identify HD-DVD and Blu-ray Drives as high density drives.

• Adds support to enable new types of Windows Media Center Extenders, such as digital televisions and networked DVD players, to connect to Windows Media Center PCs.

• Enhances the MPEG-2 decoder to support content protection across a user accessible bus on Media Center systems configured with Digital Cable Tuner hardware. This also effectively enables higher levels of hardware decoder acceleration for commercial DVD playback on some hardware.

• Enhances Netproj.exe to temporarily resize the desktop to accommodate custom projector resolutions when connecting to Windows Network Projectors.






Application Compatibility Improvements


Since the release of Windows Vista, the ecosystem has made great progress and the number of applications that have the “Works with Windows Vista” and “Certified for Windows Vista” logos has grown to well over 2000.



Thanks to the rich instrumentation capability of Windows Vista, we are able to understand the type of problems that our customers are experiencing (while respecting their personal information and privacy preferences). We use this information to focus improvements in Windows Vista, but we also share this information with our software vendor partners to help improve the reliability and compatibility of 3rd party applications.



It is our goal that applications that run on the Windows Vista Operating System today and are written using public APIs will continue to work as designed on Windows Vista SP1.



Microsoft has already released several application compatibility updates which will allow more applications to work seamlessly for the end user. These will appear in SP1, but are also available via Windows Update. For more information on previous compatibility updates, please refer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935280/. SP1 contains additional application compatibility fixes for individual applications.



Reliability Improvements
Reliability improvements vary from PC to PC based on hardware, environment, and usage. Customers will experience varying levels of benefit.

• SP1 addresses issues many of the most common causes of crashes and hangs in Windows Vista, as reported by Windows Error Reporting. These include issues relating to Windows Calendar, Windows Media Player, and a number of drivers included with Windows Vista.

• Improves reliability by preventing data-loss while ejecting NTFS-formatted removable-media.

• Improves reliability of IPSec connections over IPv6 by ensuring by ensuring that all Neighbor Discovery RFC traffic is IPsec exempted.

• Improves certain problem scenarios where a driver goes to sleep with incomplete packet transmissions by ensuring the driver is given enough time to transmit or discard any outstanding packets before going to sleep.

• Improves wireless ad-hoc connection (computer-to-computer wireless connections) success rate

• Improves the success of peer-to-peer connections, such as Windows Meeting Space or Remote Assistance applications, when both PCs are behind symmetric firewalls.

• Improves Windows Vista’s built-in file backup solution to include EFS encrypted files in the backup.

• An improved SRT (Startup Repair Tool), which is part of the Windows Recovery environment (WinRE), can now fix PCs unbootable due to certain missing OS files.

• Users who did not opt-in to the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP) will be prompted again to join after installing SP1. The experience will remain the same and the default will continue to be opt-out.




Performance and Power Consumption Improvements
Performance improvements vary from PC to PC based on hardware, environment, scenarios, and usage, so different customers will experience varying levels of benefits. About 20-25% of these improvements will be released separately via Windows update, prior to Windows Vista SP1.

• Improves the performance of browsing network file shares by consuming less bandwidth.

• Improves power consumption when the display is not changing by allowing the processor to remain in its sleep state which consumes less energy.

• Addresses the problem of the Video chipset (VSync interrupt) not allowing the system to stay asleep.

• Improves power consumption and battery life by addressing an issue that causes a hard disk to continue spinning when it should spin down, in certain circumstances.

• Improves the speed of adding and extracting files to and from a compressed (zipped) folder.

• Significantly improves the speed of moving a directory with many files underneath.

• Improves performance while copying files using BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service).

• Improves performance over Windows Vista’s current performance across the following scenarios1:

• 25% faster when copying files locally on the same disk on the same machine

• 45% faster when copying files from a remote non-Windows Vista system to a SP1 system

• 50% faster when copying files from a remote SP1 system to a local SP1 system


• Improves responsiveness when doing many kinds of file or media manipulations. For example, with Windows Vista today, copying files after deleting a different set of files can make the copy operation take longer than needed. In SP1, the file copy time is the same as if no files were initially deleted.

• Improves the copy progress estimation when copying files within Windows Explorer to about two seconds.

• Improves the time to read large images by approximately 50%.

• Improves IE performance on certain Jscript intensive websites, bringing performance in line with previous IE releases.

• Addresses a problem that caused a delay of up to 5 minutes after boot with specific ReadyDrive capable hard drives.

• Improves the effectiveness of a Windows ReadyBoost™ device in reducing the time to resume from standby and hibernate by increasing the amount of data stored in the ReadyBoost device that can be used during a resume cycle.

• Includes improvements to Windows Superfetch™ that help to further improve resume times, in many environments.

• In specific scenarios, SP1 reduces the shutdown time by a few seconds by improving the Windows Vista utility designed to sync a mobile device.

• Improves the time to resume from standby for a certain class of USB Hubs by approximately 18%.

• Improves network connection scenarios by updating the logic that auto selects which network interface to use (e.g., should a laptop use wireless or wired networking when both are available).

• Improves the performance of the user login experience on corporate PCs outside of corporate environments (e.g., a corporate laptop taken home for the evening), making it comparable with PCs within the corporate environment.

• Reduces the time it takes to return to the user’s session when using the Photo screensaver, making it comparable to other screensavers.

• Removes the delay that sometimes occurs when a user unlocks their PC.

• Improves overall media performance by reducing many glitches.

• In SP1, PC administrators are able to modify the network throttling index value for the MMCSS (Multimedia Class Scheduling Service), allowing them to determine the appropriate balance between network performance and audio/video playback quality.

• Windows Vista SP1 includes a new compression algorithm for the RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) that helps reduce network bandwidth required to send bitmaps or images via RDP. The compression, which can be selected by administrators via Group Policy settings, is transparent to all RDP traffic, and typically reduces the size of the RDP stream by as much as 25-60%, based on preliminary test results.

• The Windows Vista SP1 install process clears the user-specific data that is used by Windows to optimize performance, which may make the system feel less responsive immediately after install. As the customer uses their SP1 PC, the system will be retrained over the course of a few hours or days and will return to the previous level of responsiveness.

• SP1 addresses a number of customer performance concerns with new print driver technologies, including XPS-based printing.




Security Improvements
• Windows Vista SP1 includes all previously released Security Bulletin fixes which affect Windows Vista.

• SP1 includes Secure Development Lifecycle process updates, where Microsoft identifies the root cause of each security bulletin and improves our internal tools to eliminate code patterns that could lead to future vulnerabilities.

• Service Pack 1 includes supported APIs by which third-party security and malicious software detection applications can work alongside Kernel Patch Protection on 64-bit versions of Windows Vista. These APIs have been designed to help security and non-security ISVs develop software that extends the functionality of the Windows kernel on 64-bit systems, in a documented and supported manner, and without disabling or weakening the protection offered by Kernel Patch Protection.

• Improves the security of running RemoteApp™ programs and desktops by allowing RDP files to be signed. Administrators now have the control to differentiate the user experience based on the publisher's identity.

• Data Execution Protection (DEP) is a memory-protection feature available beginning with Windows XP and Server 2003. SP1 improves security with a new set of Win32 APIs to allow programmatic control over a process’s DEP policy. This will provide application developers with finer control on a process’s DEP settings for security, testability, compatibility, and reliability.

• Improves the trustworthiness of data presented in Windows Security Center (WSC) by ensuring that only authenticated security applications can communicate with WSC.

• Improves security on wired networks by enabling single sign on (SSO) for authenticated wired networks. The single sign on experience presents the user with a single point of credential entry rather than being double prompted for local and network logon.

• For customers upgrading from Windows XP to Windows Vista SP1, the MSRT (Malicious Software Removal Tool) will not run as part of the upgrade. Rather the up-to-date MSRT offered monthly by Windows Update will help protect PCs. · The cryptographic random number generation is improved to gather seed entropy from more sources, including a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) when available, and replaces the general purpose pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) with an AES-256 counter mode PRNG for both user and kernel mode.

• Improves security in smart card scenarios: o Introduction of a new PIN channel to securely collect smart card PINs via a PC. This new capability mitigates a number of attacks that today would require using an external PIN reader to prevent. o Enables smart cards that use biometric authentication instead of a PIN.

• Improves security over Teredo interface by blocking unsolicited traffic by default. This has already been addressed in a Security Update for Windows Vista (KB935807).

• Improves BitLocker Drive Encryption by offering an additional multi-factor authentication method that combines a key protected by the TPM (Trusted Platform Module) with a Startup Key stored on a USB storage device and a user-generated Personal Identification Number (PIN).

• Enhanced the BitLocker encryption support to volumes other than bootable volumes in Windows Vista (for Enterprise and Ultimate SKUs).

• Improves the OCSP (Online Certificate Status Protocol) implementation such that it can be configured to work with OCSP responses that are signed by trusted OCSP signers, separate from the issuer of the certificate being validated.

• Enables a standard user to invoke the CompletePC Backup application, provided that user can supply administrator credentials. Previously, only administrators could launch the application.

• The Remote Desktop client in Windows Vista SP1 provides user interface improvements for user and server authentication. The RDP client streamlines the multiple steps end users must follow to providing their credentials to Windows Server 2003 (or earlier) Terminal Servers, and simplifies the management of previously saved credentials.


Support for New Technologies and Standards
• Adds support for new strong cryptographic algorithms used in IPsec. SHA-256, AES-GCM, and AES-GMAC for ESP and AH, ECDSA, SHA-256, and SHA-384 for IKE and AuthIP.

• Adds the NIST SP 800-90 Elliptical Curve Cryptography (ECC) pseudo-random number generator (PRNG) to the list of available PRNG in Windows Vista.

• Adds support for SSTP (Secure Sockets Tunnel Protocol), a remote access VPN tunneling protocol that will be part of Microsoft’s RRAS (Routing and Remote Access Service) platform. SSTP helps provide full-network VPN remote access connections over SSL, removing some of the VPN connectivity challenges that other VPN tunnels face traversing NAT, web proxies, and firewalls.

• Adds full support for the latest IEEE draft of 802.11n wireless networking.

• Adds support for obtaining identity and invoke identity UI from an inner method via a new EAPHost runtime API as well as a configuration UI for tunnel methods. These APIs are useful for developers working on tunneling/multi-phased EAP authentication methods as well as those who implement networking supplicants which consume EAP authentications.

• Adds support for Windows Smartcard Framework to enable compliance with the EU

• Digital Signature Directive and National ID / eID.

• Adds support for the Parental Controls Games Restrictions for ratings from the Korean Game Rating Board (GRB).

• Enhances TCP Chimney network card support so that a TCP Chimney network card can also support Compound TCP.

• Adds support in the Wireless Client for a new FIPS (Federal Information Processing) compliant mode. This mode is FIPS 140-2 compliant because it moves the cryptographic processing from the wireless network card to an existing FIPS-approved cryptographic library.

• Enhances Windows Firewall and IPsec to use the new cryptographic algorithms that are Suite B compliant.

• Updated drivers are delivered primarily via Windows Update and directly from hardware vendors, not as part of a service pack. However, a small number of critical drivers are included as part of Windows Vista (e.g., display drivers, audio drivers) and some of these have been updated.


Desktop Administration and Management
• Allows users and administrators to control which volumes the disk defragmenter runs on.

• Allows users and administrators using Network Diagnostics to solve the most common file sharing problems, not just network connection problems.

• Enables polling of RMS server at regular intervals to identify new templates and download them to the local template store. Previously these templates were pushed to clients via a combination of Group Policy and scripting. Additionally SP1 provides an API for applications to query and access template in the template store.

• Windows Vista SP1 includes a new Security Policy (UAC: Allow UAccess), which allows applications to prompt for elevation without using the secure desktop. This allows a remote helper to enter administrative credentials during a Remote Assistance session.

• Allows administrators to configure NAP Clients to: Receive updates from Windows Update or Microsoft Update, in addition to WSUS (Windows Server Update Services), as is the case for Windows Vista today. Define the time a client has to retrieve and submit Statements of Health. This allows the NAP client to respond in time when a particular connection has a timeout requirement. Use DNS server records to discover health registration authority (HRA) servers when there are no HRA’s configured through local configuration or group policy.

• Allow healthy clients used by the Help Desk to establish IPSec connections to unhealthy machines to help resolve problems. This improves the supportability of NAP by allowing Help Desk technicians with health compliant machines to establish connections (e.g. remote desktop, file share) to help resolve issues.

• Allows administrators to add a WSD (Web Services for Devices) Print Device to remote Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 machines. This can be accomplished by using the Print Management Console.

• Allows the administrators to use a new admin flag to allow WMI scripted enumeration of all contents in the CSC cache. This will enhance WMI scripted administration for offline folders in Windows Vista. Previously this was available only through the COM API.

• Improves printing to local printers from within a Terminal Server session. · Allows users to rename or delete folders while working offline with redirected folders. This functionality is important to users that use Folder Redirection and work in offline mode for extended periods of time. This functionality is disabled by default but can be enabled by enabling a registry setting.

• Enhances the existing Vista EAPHost service by including an EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol) Certification Program (ECP) Detection Mechanism. This mechanism makes delivery of EAP Methods submitted to the ECP available through Windows Update.

• Adds a WMI interface as a replacement for the MoveUser.exe tool which was removed from Windows Vista. This allows customers to remap an existing workgroup or domain user account profile to a new domain user account profile.

• Allows an administrator to configure properties of a network, such as the name, and deploy it network-wide via a Group Policy snap-in.

• Allows KMS (Key Management Service) to run within a Virtual Machine environment.




Setup and Deployment Improvements
• Enables global organizations to more easily deploy SP1 in a multi-lingual environment, as SP1 includes all 36 language packs. However, this change contributes to the increased size of the standalone package.

• Enables users to get updated Help content via a separate downloadable package. This package will be released around SP1 release.

• Enables support for hotpatching, a reboot-reduction servicing technology designed to maximize uptime. It works by allowing Windows components to be updated (or "patched") while they are still in use by a running process. Hotpatch-enabled update packages are installed via the same methods as traditional update packages, and will not trigger a system reboot.

• Improves migration and upgrade scenarios relating to the component that allows alternate text input “modalities” like speech, handwriting, and multi-byte character input editors in applications that were not written specifically to support them.

• Improves OS deployment by enabling 64-bit versions of Windows Vista to be installed from a 32-bit OS. This will allow IT professionals to maintain just a single WinPE image.

• Improves OS deployment by supporting the installation of offline boot critical storage drivers. WinPE will automatically look to a hidden partition for drivers. It will search that partition recursively, and if boot critical drivers are present they will be loaded. Non-boot critical drivers will be picked up and staged, but not loaded prior to the OS coming online.

• Improves patch deployment by retrying failed updates in cases where multiple updates are pending and the failure of one update causes other updates to fail as well.

• Enables reliable OS installation by optimizing OS installers so that they are run only when required during patch installation. Fewer installers operating results in fewer points of potential failure during installation, which leads to more robust and reliable installation.

• Improves overall install time for updates by optimizing the query for installed OS updates.

• Improves robustness during the patch installation by being resilient to transient errors such as sharing violations or access violations.

• Improves robustness of transient failures during the disk cleanup of old OS files after install.

• Improves the uninstallation experience for OS updates by improving the uninstallation routines in custom OS installation code.

• Improves reliability of OS updates by making them more resilient to unexpected interruptions, such as power failure.

• Improved instrumentation allows additional data to be sent to Microsoft via the CEIP (Customer Experience Improvement Program) when enabled. This telemetry data led to the identification of numerous issues that are addressed in SP1 and resulted in improvement in the reliability of OS servicing. (CEIP is respectful of personally identifiable information and adheres to terms discussed in the EULA.)

• After the SP1 version of the OPK (OEM pre-installation kit) is installed, further OPK updates will not be required if a servicing stack update is issued. (The servicing stack is the underlying set of binaries used to update the system). Post SP1, offline images may be updated using the servicing stack binaries contained in the image rather than the servicing stack binaries in the OPK.


Interoperability Improvements
• SP1 exposes Ideal Send Backlog (ISB) information to Winsock2 clients to enable better throughput over high bandwidth, high latency links when communicating with Windows Server 2008. Applications that are modified to use the new ISB info will provide better throughput when sending large amounts of data over such links to other Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 machines. Applications not modified to take advantage of this change will function as before.

• SP1 includes throughput improvements to Send in TransmitFile/TransmitPackets and ftp.exe, when communicating with Windows Server 2008 over high bandwidth, high latency links. Ftp.exe and other applications using TransmitFile/TransmitPackets on Windows Vista SP1 will achieve better throughput when sending files over such links to other Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 machines.


Feature or API Changes
• GPMC (Group Policy Management Console) will be uninstalled with Service Pack 1 and GPEdit will default to Local Group Policy editing. Following these changes, SP1 users can download an updated version of GPMC which will include new Group Policy capabilities including adding comments to GPOs or individual settings and searching for specific Group Policy settings.

• The MSN Connection Center Dial-up Internet Access connector was removed from the Windows Vista Connection Wizard.

• Includes a new Offline Files interface that exports the dirty byte count for a file that is modified offline. This interface is exposed both through the COM APIs and WMI provider for Offline Files.


General Improvements and Enhancements
• SP1 includes a number of changes which allow computer manufacturers and consumers to select a default desktop search program similar to the way they currently select defaults for third-party web browsers and media players. That means that in addition to the numerous ways a user could access a third party search solution in Windows Vista, they can now get to their preferred search results from additional entry points in the Start Menu and Explorer Windows in Windows Vista with SP1. 3rd party software vendors simply need to register their search application using the newly provided protocol in Windows Vista SP1 to enable these options for their customers.

• With SP1, Windows Vista will report the amount of system memory installed rather than report the amount of system memory available to the OS. Therefore 32-bit systems equipped with 4GB of RAM will report all 4BG in many places throughout the OS, such as the System Control Panel. However, this behavior is dependent on having a compatible BIOS, so not all users may notice this change.

• SP1 reduces the number of UAC (User Account Control) prompts from 4 to 1 when creating or renaming a folder at a protected location.

• Improvements in the Licensing User Interface and User Experience including more details in the help about activation and what happens if user does not activate; more detailed and descriptive dialog text; raw error codes replaced with easily comprehensible text.

• SP1 modifies the text in the Ultimate Extras Control Panel to describe the Ultimate Extras program in more general terms.

• Upon scanning a photo with the Vista scanning experience, SP1 will open Explorer rather than opening Windows Photo Gallery.

• Users are now required to enter a password hint during the initial setup of Windows Vista SP1. This change was made based on feedback from top PC manufactures that many customers frequently do not remember their password and because the administrator account is turned off by default on Windows Vista, these users do not have a way to access to their PCs. A password hint helps avoid this frustrating scenario.

• Improves compatibility with 3rd party diagnostic tools that rely on raw sockets by applying the same delivery logic to control (ICMP v4 and v6) and regular packages.

• While not reflected in the initial release candidate this week, we will also be making changes effective with SP1 in how we differentiate the experience customers have using non-genuine versions of our software. This is based on feedback we heard from volume license customers in particular as part of our Windows Genuine Advantage program.

• Also coming with SP1 but not in the current release candidate, we will also be including updates that deal with two exploits we have seen, which can affect system stability for our customers. The OEM Bios exploit, which involves modifying system files and the BIOS of the motherboard to mimic a type of product activation performed on copies of Windows that are pre-installed by OEMs in the factory. The Grace Timer exploit, which attempts to reset the “grace time” limit between installation and activation to something like the year 2099 in some cases.


Windows Vista Alignment with Windows Server 2008
Windows Vista is aligned with Windows Server 2008, meaning that many files are common to both products. A result of this design is that there are cases where a common binary is modified to enable a server scenario that has limited or no effect on Windows Vista SP1 capabilities. Here are few examples:



• File Sharing: The file sharing subsystem on Windows Vista only allows 10 concurrent inbound connections. Windows Server 2008 must scale to support thousands of concurrent connections. During the testing and customer feedback phase of Windows Server 2008 development, the file sharing subsystems are tuned and refined to optimize the file sharing stack for performance, scalability and reliability. This level of tuning and refinement are not typically applicable on a 10-connection limit client, but are critical to a file server role. Changes like this are done primarily for the server scenarios, although these changes may also benefit Windows Vista SP1.

• IIS 7: IIS was included in some Windows Vista SKUs to enable web-based developers to write and test their applications. IIS in Windows Server 2008 is a significant server role which requires Internet-level scalability and performance requirements. The IIS7 components have gone through significant performance and reliability enhancements since Windows Vista originally shipped, in order to be a large-scale server component. These changes do not affect most Windows Vista users who do not even have the IIS7 components installed, however because Windows Vista and Windows Server are aligned, these changes are included in Windows Vista SP1.

• Concurrent User Support: Key subsystems such as the Windows Logon process and the core kernel need only support user-switching scenarios on Windows Vista. However, on Windows Server 2008, where a Terminal Server may have thousands of users logged in simultaneously, these subsystems must be tuned for maximum performance and reliability. Changes like this are done primarily for the server scenarios, although they may also benefit Windows Vista SP1.

Con SP1 vi va via il pannello di controllo??si, l'icona da start non funziona, io vi accedo tramite Computer > pannello di controllo. Nemmeno se crei il collegamento sul desktop funziona. Inoltre se vado su "programmi installati ecc.." e clicco su "visualizza aggiornament installati" non funziona, posso accedervi solo andando in modalità provvisoria (per disintallare l'sp1 ad sempio ho fatto così). Ora sto reinstallando tutto vista, poi metto driver e tutto e infine sp1 rc1 e vi so dire se sono problemi confermati o dovuti al fatto che la mia installazione è antidiluviana :D
ci sentiamo tra un'oretta ;)

Credo che il tuo problema sia dovuto al fatto che hai installato l'sp su un sistema "sporco"... io infatti per tre volte ho installato l'sp subito dopo aver installato vista e non ho avuto problemi... stessa cosa è successa ad un mio amico, ha installato l'sp1 con vista "sporco" ed ha avuto problemi, con vista fresco fresco di installazione non ne ha avuti :)

Credo che il tuo problema sia dovuto al fatto che hai installato l'sp su un sistema "sporco"... io infatti per tre volte ho installato l'sp subito dopo aver installato vista e non ho avuto problemi... stessa cosa è successa ad un mio amico, ha installato l'sp1 con vista "sporco" ed ha avuto problemi, con vista fresco fresco di installazione non ne ha avuti :)

No resisterò, ho vista fresco istallato , stasera devo fare gli ultimi ritocchi , devo set uppare la barra stardock e quei piccoli software che uso , fortunatamente non ho perso nemmeno un Byte perchè quando reistalli sullo stesso hard disk senza formattare ti si crea una cartella Windows OLD con tutto il vecchio sistema all interno :D

avendo provato gli ultimi 2, questo mi sembra decisamente migliore pur avendo il sistema con l'installazione completa..ho giusto riformattato il mio xp x64 x provare sto sp rc:)

Ho provato Vlite: nada, integra solo hotfix....vorrà dire che mi preparo il vistaNOSP con il mio bel Vlite e poi si installa la sp1 da 548Mb

Installate kb a cazzo , vi facci anche vedere che la versione del file sono sbagliati ma nulla.

b) Vi linko il download ufficiale di Microsoft , prima che la sp1 era pubblica

a me l'unico, finora.., problema riguarda punk-buster non ha funzionato ho lanciato il setup e mi ha dato msxxxdll mancante, ho scovato l'exe in sys 32 e ho fatto partire il servizio con quello:(

allego il file user32.dll.mui (testato e funz.) italiano che toglie "copia di valutazione" dal desktop..

edit: aggiungo anche che occorre settare l'utente in uso come proprietario del file ed assegnare controllo completo per poterlo sovrascrivere
